Hope for healing even the most stubborn sores

Diabetes and problems with circulation can interrupt the skin healing cycle, which in turn can cause non-healing sores and ulcers to develop and linger on.

The two types of non-healing sores treated by Apligraf® are called diabetic foot ulcers and venous leg ulcers. Even if it doesn’t hurt, an open sore is a medical emergency. It can lead to life threatening infection, gangrene and, in the case of diabetic foot ulcers, amputation. Venous leg sores can also lead to severe pain.

A non-healing sore is one that is not healing after 3-4 weeks. It may require special medical attention because this kind of wound will not always respond to standard treatments like antibiotics, creams, dressings and debridement (a treatment involving the removal of dead, damaged or infected tissue from a wound).

Beyond being uncomfortable and inconvenient, these types of open sores can seriously impact your quality of life. A stubborn sore can limit your mobility, your day-to-day activities, your independence, and affect your self-esteem.1
