Step Three: Cornification

Over a 20 day period

  • Keratinocyte medium is replaced by a maintenance medium
  • Cells continue to mature
  • Distinct epidermal and dermal layers are present
  • Developing bilayer is air-lifted (exposed to air)
  • Incubated (air-liquid interface) for 10 days1,2
    • Enhances maturation of keratinocytes in epidermal layer
    • Produces a stratum corneum (cornification)
